Access to affordable healthcare remains one of the most pressing concerns for Nigerian families — particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act, signed into law in 2022, was designed to address this by making health insurance mandatory and expanding coverage to every Nigerian.

What the NHIA Act Does

The Act establishes a framework for universal health coverage, requiring all Nigerians — employed and self-employed, formal and informal sector — to enrol in a health insurance scheme. It creates a Vulnerable Group Fund to cover those who cannot afford premiums, including children under five, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

How to Enrol

Nigerians can enrol through accredited Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) or through state-level health insurance agencies. In many states, enrolment drives are conducted at the local government level, often in partnership with community organisations and faith-based groups.

Community Health Centres

The Federal Government has also invested in upgrading Primary Health Care centres across the country, ensuring that every ward has a functional facility staffed with trained health workers.

Health is a fundamental right. ENPUAI’s Inform Unit urges every family to explore their health insurance options and to demand quality healthcare services at the community level.
